From here, continue towards the Drakensberg, staying at Three Tree Hill Lodge overlooking Spionkop Reserve. Days here are spent outdoors, with mountain backdrops, game filled valleys and optional walks nearby. It’s a peaceful setting where you can take in the landscape properly.

Battlefields and Heritage

The journey then moves into one of South Africa’s most historic regions, near Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. Staying at Fugitives’ Drift Lodge places you close to the key sites of the Anglo Zulu War, with guided tours that explain the events clearly and in detail. Between tours, there’s time for walks on the reserve and relaxed evenings looking out across the open plains.

Hluhluwe Safari

Next, spend two nights at Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge in Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, one of South Africa’s well known Big Five reserves. Game drives are included and led by experienced rangers, with early mornings and late afternoons out in the bush tracking wildlife. In between, there’s time to relax at the lodge, take in the views or visit the spa. It’s a strong safari experience without needing to travel further north.

Coast near Durban

The final stretch brings you back to the coast for three nights at Sala Beach House in Ballito. After time on guided tours and game drives, this is your chance to slow the pace. Walk the beach in the morning, spend the afternoon by the pool and head out for relaxed dinners by the sea. It’s a comfortable way to finish the journey before flying home via Johannesburg.

A good fly and drive trip gives you structure without taking away freedom. You land, collect the car and follow a route that has been thought through properly, but your days still feel open. Stop when a viewpoint catches your eye, detour into a small town for lunch, or linger somewhere longer because it simply feels right. In the right country, the driving becomes part of the story.
