An Arctic adventure through Norway with HX Hurtigruten Expeditions

Three thrilling bespoke experiences are included in HX’s glorious new Arctic Norway itinerary, which offers something quite distinct from its existing cruises. These are Day to Dusk – Flames and Flavours, an immersion in the polar night around a bonfire with Norwegian snacks at a natural landing site; Into the Night: Dinner at the Museum, an exclusive evening event combining local heritage and cuisine; and Nordic Sauna and Polar Plunge, with the quintessential Scandinavian experience followed by a leap into the icy waters of the Arctic – a fantastic way to get a blast of serotonin.

An Arctic adventure through Norway with HX Hurtigruten Expeditions

The eight-day Tromsø round-trip takes place aboard MS Spitsbergen, named after the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago.

Modern and environmentally progressive, with fresh Scandinavian design, the ship is perfectly suited for off-the-beaten-track exploration with maneuverability and an optimal size for navigating polar waters. It's also ideal for accessing the loveliest spots for activities such as snowshoeing, hiking, and kayaking

The onboard Expedition Team serves as a university at sea, hosting fascinating lectures both indoors and out on the sun deck, and introducing you to the Norwegian notion of friluftsliv (outdoor life) by encouraging you to take part in hikes and other activities throughout the cruise. HX has been sailing Norway’s coast since 1896, and nobody knows it like they do.

The sailing will visit four iconic regions on the following route, with short distances between the sheltered fjords allowing for the greatest flexibility to be guided by nature and the expedition staff, giving you the purest and most adventurous experience:

Tromsø | Lyngen | Senja | Senja–Lofoten | Lofoten | Vesterålen | Senja/Malangen | Tromsø

Setting out from Tromsø, you’ll spend an unforgettable week immersing yourself in the glacial majesty of the Lyngen Alps, the dramatic Lofoten Islands, the forested mountains of Vesterålen, and serene Senja, seeing snow-frosted mountains, deep blue fjords, quaint fishing villages and – with luck – the Northern Lights.

Senja, Norway’s second-largest island – often referred to as ‘Norway-in-miniature’ - is a place of rugged mountains, sandy beaches, deep forests, charming fishing villages, and free-roaming reindeer. You’ll be warmly welcomed by a local community and learn about Sámi culture and life in remote villages during the winter months. At times, you’ll be sailing in the dark and at dusk, through glittering snowscapes illuminated by the low sun and the starlight.

Sailing towards the Lofoten Islands, your Expedition Team will scout for spots for a great nature landing – perhaps a fine beach covered in pristine snow. They may also take you in a small expedition boat or kayak to explore between remote islands. Lofoten is a region of windswept islands, sheltered bays, and some of the most world’s most gorgeous fjords, with sea eagles soaring overhead.

You can also enjoy a four-day pre-programme of classic Norwegian activities, staying in Tromsø and experiencing the likes of Sami storytelling, dog-sledding through a silent white landscape, snoeshowing to see the Northern Lights, and a pampering session in an Arctic spa, making this the ultimate adventure.
