Stepping Aboard the Danube: A Taste of Christmas on the River

From Passau to Passau visting Vienna, Bratislava and Linz

Last November I swapped the usual build-up to Christmas for something a little more magical: a river cruise along the Danube. Starting with a night in Munich, then sailing from Passau to Vienna, Bratislava and Linz, it was a journey wrapped in twinkling lights, festive markets and cosy moments on board.

Last November I was lucky enough to enjoy a river cruise along the beautiful Danube, a journey filled with twinkling lights, mulled wine and storybook cities dressed for Christmas.

Our adventure began with a flight into Munich, where we spent one night soaking up the Bavarian atmosphere. The next morning we set off on foot, wandering through the city’s Christmas markets. Wooden stalls trimmed with greenery and fairy lights lined the squares, the air scented with roasted chestnuts, spiced biscuits and glühwein. Locals and visitors mingled together, warming their hands around steaming mugs and browsing handmade decorations and gifts. It felt like stepping straight into a festive postcard.

From Munich we took the train to Passau, where our river cruise awaited. Passau itself, with its pastel houses and pretty riverfront, was the perfect backdrop as we boarded and settled into life on the water. Over the next four nights, the Danube carried us gracefully between some of Central Europe’s most enchanting cities: Vienna, Bratislava and Linz.

Vienna was all elegance and culture, with grand buildings illuminated against the night sky and Christmas markets tucked into its famous squares. Bratislava offered a slightly quieter charm, with its compact old town, cobbled streets and a more intimate, local feel to the festivities. Linz combined history and creativity, and once again the markets pulled us in with their soft glow and cosy atmosphere.

Every stop brought a new market to explore, each with its own character but all sharing the same festive spirit: stalls piled high with handcrafted ornaments, woollen hats and scarves, local delicacies and irresistible sweet treats. The gentle pace of river cruising meant we could step ashore, meander at leisure, then return to the comfort of the ship as the city lights reflected on the water.

Looking back, the Christmas markets were absolutely the highlight of the trip: a wonderful blend of culture, tradition and seasonal magic, all without the rush and stress that can creep into the festive season at home. A Danube river cruise in November is a perfect way to ease into Christmas, with time to wander, taste and simply enjoy the journey.
