My Week on board Sun Princess
Our round-trip Mediterranean itinerary included Bar (Montenegro), Corfu (Greece), Taormina (Sicily), and Naples (Italy)—where we made a DIY trip to Sorrento by public ferry. For clients looking to blend independent exploration with the ease of a luxury cruise, this was a dream week.
- First Impressions: The New Sun Princess Sun Princess is the first of Princess’s Sphere Class ships, and it’s packed with smart design, open architecture, and a contemporary feel that feels closer to a resort than a traditional cruise ship. Highlights included:
The stunning Dome, a glass-enclosed pool and aerial performance venue.
A completely redesigned Piazza, which feels airy, vibrant, and elegant.
An infinity-style Wake View pool at the aft—ideal for sailaways.
- My Stateroom I stayed in a balcony stateroom—modern, well-designed, and super comfortable. USB ports and clever storage made it functional, and the balcony became my go-to spot for morning coffee and evening views.
- Itinerary Overview: Mediterranean Ports of Call This cruise offered a wonderful mix of well-known and lesser-visited ports. Here's what stood out at each:
- Bar, Montenegro A hidden Adriatic gem! We ventured to Stari Bar, an atmospheric hilltop old town filled with fortress ruins and panoramic views. A great port for clients who appreciate authentic, un-touristy destinations.
- Corfu, Greece We explored the beautiful UNESCO-listed Old Town, with its Venetian buildings, charming alleyways, and lively cafés. Perfect for those who enjoy relaxed wandering and Mediterranean ambiance.
- Taormina, Sicily Easily one of the highlights of the week. Perched dramatically above the coast with Mount Etna in view, Taormina blends historic sites (like the ancient Greek theatre) with boutique shopping and stunning scenery. Highly recommended for culture lovers.
- Naples (Italy) – Ferry to Sorrento We docked in Naples, but rather than book a shore excursion, we took the public ferry across the bay to Sorrento—a scenic, affordable, and very doable independent option.
Sorrento’s lemon-scented streets, cliffside views, and coastal charm made it a fantastic DIY day trip. This is a great tip for confident travellers who like to explore at their own pace. (If clients want a little more structure, I can help with private transfers or small group tours instead.)
-Dining Onboard Dining on Sun Princess was excellent and varied. Highlights for me included:
Horizons Dining Room – Three floors, each with different vibes and views.
Sabatini’s – Still a favourite for Italian fine dining.
The Catch by Rudi – A standout new specialty seafood restaurant.
O’Malley’s Irish Pub – Lively atmosphere and a great casual menu.
Princess’s Plus and Premier packages (which include drinks, tips, and Wi-Fi) remain a strong value for most clients.
- Entertainment & Activities Entertainment on board was modern, diverse, and very engaging. I saw:
Aerial performances under The Dome.
Live music in the Piazza.
Themed parties, quizzes, and even a silent disco.
There's truly something for every kind of traveller.
- Travel Agent Insights: Who Is This Cruise For? Sun Princess with this itinerary would be ideal for:
Couples and honeymooners seeking romance and culture.
Solo travellers or small groups who enjoy a relaxed but upscale experience.
First-time cruisers, especially those worried about feeling “crowded”—this ship’s spacious design puts that fear to rest.
Independent travellers who want the option to explore ports like Naples/Sorrento on their own.
- Final Thoughts As a travel agent, this cruise gave me a fresh, personal insight into Princess’s new direction—and I love it. The Sun Princess combines sleek design, outstanding service, and thoughtfully curated ports into an experience that will absolutely appeal to both loyal Princess fans and newcomers alike.
