A Journey Along Norway’s Living Coast: Hurtigruten’s Coastal Express

Norway’s coast is made to be sailed. Not rushed past from a coach window, but experienced slowly: slipping into tiny harbours, crossing the Arctic Circle, watching mountains rise straight from the sea. In May 2025, I travelled southbound with Hurtigruten’s iconic Coastal Express from Kirkenes to Bergen, and it remains one of the most immersive journeys I have ever taken.
Over six days, the ship traced a historic route that has linked Norway’s coastal communities for more than a century. This is not a conventional cruise; it is a working coastal lifeline that happens to pass through some of the most spectacular scenery on earth.
We set off from the remote, snow‑dusted town of Kirkenes under the midnight sun, then called at Arctic towns and fishing villages such as Hammerfest and Tromsø. In Tromsø, there was time to slip into a cosy harbour pub for a beer in near‑constant daylight, sharing the space with locals and fellow travellers.
The approach to the Lofoten Islands was a true highlight: jagged, snow‑capped peaks rising straight from the sea, the ship gliding through the narrow Raftsund strait and making a thrilling detour into the steep‑walled Trollfjord. In Svolvær, rows of red rorbuer cabins and wooden cod racks told the story of generations who have lived from the sea.
Crossing the Arctic Circle was marked by a playful Hurtigruten tradition, a spoonful of cod liver oil on deck, before the scenery slowly softened on the way south. Stops in Bodø and Trondheim brought a blend of wild landscapes and historic streets, from coffee with mountain views to the Gothic Nidaros Cathedral and the colourful wooden houses of Bakklandet.
We arrived in Bergen on 17 May, Norway’s Constitution Day, and walked straight into a city in celebration: children in traditional bunads, bands playing, flags everywhere and that classic Bryggen wharf view under blue skies. It was the perfect finale to a voyage that felt deeply local, authentic and unforgettable.
