From Childhood Escapes to Chic Retreats: Why I’m still in Love with Club Med

Jessica Anhold on 16 Oct 2025

Discover why Club Med has been my family’s go-to for over 30 years. From kids’ clubs and fine dining to ski resorts and sailing adventures, explore the magic of premium all-inclusive holidays with a travel professional who’s been there.

As the eldest of five children, my parents certainly had their work cut out for them when it came to keeping us entertained on summer holidays. With a ten-year gap between the oldest and youngest, we were a lively bunch with different interests. Add to that an energetic dad who couldn’t sit still and a mum who longed for some peace and a good book, and you can imagine the challenge!

Discovering Club Med

In 1991, we discovered the answer - Club Med. At the time, it was a relatively new concept in Ireland and didn’t have the brand recognition it enjoys today. But off we went to try the Club Med Sandpiper resort in Florida. It was love at first sight.

My sister and I threw ourselves into the Mini Club activities - waterskiing, performing in shows, making new friends, and even joining the circus school (there’s still a photo somewhere of 6 of us hanging upside down from a bicycle!). My youngest sister joined the Petit Club, while my twin toddler brothers were able to give my mum some (occasional!) peace and quiet whilst being cared for in the Baby Club. Dad spent his days trying every sport imaginable, particularly the water sports, and between us all, we built quite the collection of those famous Club Med medals over the years.

A Family Tradition That Spanned the Globe

From there, our family adventures continued as we experienced more Club Med resorts in the Caribbean, Bahamas, Greece, and Italy. As an adult, I revisited the magic at some of my favourite resorts, this time with my own family.

Over the years, we tried other all-inclusive resorts that attempted to replicate the Club Med experience, but none ever quite managed it. I was even inspired to work in Italian holiday villages during my college summers, driven by the joy and energy I’d first discovered at Club Med.

Once bitten by the Club Med bug, it’s hard to go back. It really is a state of mind. (I can still sing “Hands Up” word for word,  with actions, more than 30 years later. If you know, you know!)

75 Years of All-Inclusive Excellence

This year, Club Med celebrates its 75th anniversary. Founded as a French company in 1950, it now boasts over 70 premium all-inclusive resorts across nearly 40 countries on 5 continents, with its first South African resort set to open in 2026. While it’s renowned for its sun destinations, Club Med is also a pioneer in all-inclusive ski holidays, with more than 20 mountain resorts - most of them ski-in, ski-out - offering a truly effortless alpine experience.

And for something a little different, Club Med even operates its own cruise ship, the Club Med 2, a magnificent five-masted sailing yacht offering premium all-inclusive voyages around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

Why Families Love Club Med

At its heart, Club Med remains deeply family-focused. In its sun resorts, children under 6 stay free, and in ski resorts, children under 4 stay and dine free. Discounts for older kids and teens are also available, depending on the destination and season.

The brand’s renowned Kids Clubs cater to every age - from babies as young as 4 months to teens up to 17 - each offering age-appropriate care, fun, and adventure. The dedicated children’s restaurants are a thoughtful touch, with fresh milk, puréed food, and bottle warmers available throughout the day, ensuring even the youngest guests are well looked after.

Many lifelong friendships are born in these clubs; I made friends I still keep in touch with, including one who I later visited in California!

Perfect for Adults Too

That said, Club Med also caters beautifully to adults, with several adult-only resorts and dedicated adult-only areas within others - ideal for couples, friends, and solo travellers seeking a balance of activity and relaxation.

Whether you’re into sailing, yoga, trapeze, tennis, paddleboarding, or simply relaxing by the pool, Club Med’s spirit of active relaxation shines through. With over 60 land and water activities, there’s truly something for everyone. Add to that the consistently high standard of cuisine and premium drinks, and it’s easy to see why “all-inclusive” really does mean all-inclusive at Club Med - without ever compromising on quality.

Staying True to Its Values

Perhaps most impressively, Club Med has stayed true to its founding values. Long before sustainability became a buzzword, they were advocating for responsible tourism and harmony with nature. Today, many of their resorts hold Green Globe certification, reflecting that same long-term commitment.

Three Generations of Club Med Memories

As I plan my youngest child’s very first Club Med experience, I can’t help but reflect on how this brand has shaped my family’s travel story for nearly 35 years - across 3 generations. Club Med has given us some of our happiest memories, and I can’t wait to see what new ones await.

Here’s to more adventures, more laughter, and many more Club Med moments.
