Is Lapland Suitable for Adults Without Children?

Here is why Lapland should be at the top of your travel list, and how you can experience its real magic without the family crowds. Is Lapland Worth Visiting Without Kids? (How to Plan an Adult Arctic Break) When most people start searching for an Arctic holiday, they run into the same problem: almost every guide, hotel review, and brochure is aimed at families with young children, meeting Santa, and frantic December trips. If you are travelling as a couple, planning an adventure with friends, or simply dreaming of standing under the Northern Lights without being surrounded by toddler activity schedules, it can leave you asking: Is Lapland actually worth visiting without kids? As a Travel Counsellor who designs bespoke, tailor made itineraries, I have seen a huge increase in interest in this destination in the last year. A preference for "Coolcations" and bucket list experiential travel is on the increase. Having experienced the region away from the commercial tourist hubs myself, I can tell you that Lapland is one of Europe’s most incredible destinations for adults, if you know how to plan it properly. Here is how to look past the festive marketing and craft an adult Arctic escape that delivers peace, adventure, and real luxury.

1. The Dilemma: "Will we be surrounded by family Santa packages?"

The biggest hesitation adults have when considering Lapland is feeling like they’re intruding on a children's theme park trip.

The Solution: Lapland is vast—spanning thousands of square miles of untamed forest and frozen lakes. The family focused Santa tourism is largely concentrated around specific commercial areas in central Rovaniemi during peak weeks.

When planning an adult trip, it's worth choosing locations that showcase Lapland’s tranquil, natural beauty instead:

  • For complete quiet & Northern Lights: I'd suggest regions far north like Inari, Nellim, or Muonio that offer authentic wilderness lodges surrounded by untouched nature.
  • For great dining & outdoor active options: Boutique resorts near Levi give you access to incredible ski slopes and fine dining, while staying in quiet chalets tucked away in the pine forests.
  • For Santa free winter landscapes: High altitude areas like Kainuu get early, heavy snowfall without the festive Santa focus, making them perfect for adults seeking pure winter scenery.

2. The Dilemma: "What is there to do if we aren't interested in Santa?"

Another common misconception is that the activities are geared solely toward children. While meeting Santa is special for little ones, Lapland is an outdoor playground built for adult bucket list adventures.

Beyond classic husky sledding and snowmobiling, an adult itinerary opens up amazing experiences you won't find on a standard family package:

  • Ice Floating: Wearing full body thermal suits, you float weightlessly in a frozen wilderness river while gazing up at the dark Arctic sky.
  • Snowshoeing & Forest Riding: Trail riding on horseback through silent, snow laden pine forests.
  • Traditional Finnish Sauna Culture: Unwind in a private wood fired sauna before taking a brave, invigorating dip in an ice hole - a classic local ritual!
  • Gourmet Wilderness Dining: Multi course tasting menus served in cosy, remote log cabins or secluded ice structures.

So many winter activities in Finland are on offer

3. The Dilemma: "Do we have to travel in December?"

If you aren't tied to school holiday calendars, December is rarely the best time for an adult trip. Peak December dates carry premium pricing, heavy crowds, and extremely limited daylight hours.

The Solution: Look at the winter season as a whole.

  • January to March: This is the sweet spot for couples and adult groups. You get deep snow cover, ideal conditions for winter sports, dark evenings perfect for Northern Lights hunting, and a far more serene, relaxing atmosphere.
  • April: A fantastic option if you want longer daylight hours, bright sunshine over the snow, and great value, with active winter sports running through mid month.
  • Autumn (Ruska): September and October bring stunning fiery foliage, crisp hiking weather, and the chance to view the Northern Lights reflecting off open water before the lakes freeze over.

4. The Dilemma: "Is accommodation just basic wooden cabins?"

Where you stay in Lapland shouldn't just be a place to sleep, it should be a highlight of your holiday. For adults, the range of unique, high end accommodation is incredible:

  • Glass Fronted Suites: Properties like the Arctic Glass Suites in Muonio let you lie in bed under a heated glass roof, watching the snow fall or the Aurora Borealis dance overhead.
  • Adults Only Wilderness Lodges: Serene retreats featuring private saunas, outdoor hot tubs, and high end personal service.
  • Luxury Ice Hotels & Private Villas: We can offer tailored options designed for privacy, comfort, and direct access to nature.

5. The Dilemma: "Flight logistics feel complicated"

Many travellers assume you have to fly direct into Rovaniemi and take long, tiring road transfers to reach quiet wilderness areas.

In reality, direct flights from several UK airports operate into multiple regional airports across Finnish Lapland—including Kittilä for Levi and Muonio, and Ivalo for northern wilderness resorts like Saariselkä and Inari. Additionally, indirect routes via Helsinki with Finnair offer incredible flexibility and often lower prices. Matching the right arrival airport directly to your resort is key to minimising travel time.
