Adventures in Switzerland

I was excited to go back to Switzerland as it had been far too long so back to Lauterbrunnen we went, a 2hr 29 min drive from Zurich or you can catch a train.

Think mountain valleys, waterfalls as far as the eye can see, snowcapped mountains above you and epic views everywhere you look. Oh, and cows grazing in the valleys with bells around their necks. It’s just totally jaw dropping in every direction.

Lauterbrunnen is one of the most visited areas in Switzerland it’s pretty small but big on appeal, with glacial waterfalls, hiking trails, dramatic cliffs, and quaint villages it’s absolutely gorgeous. It is the gateway to the Jungfrau Region and known as the valley of 72 waterfalls.

It’s a beautiful place to start your Honeymoon off with some adventure and with lots of onward flight connections Switzerland can be combined with almost all of the top beach destination too. Maldives, Mauritius, Thailand, South Africa and Greece to name a few.

It’s all about the outdoors here and mountain vistas and snowy views while visiting some of the highest points in Europe. Everything is reached by a super-efficient systems of cable cars, gondolas and funicular railways and trains. I’d recommend getting the Swiss Half fare card before you travel which give you 50% discount on most train, cable cars and gondolas it’s €100 per person currently.

You will also need a Swiss pass card - this is an identity card which you load digitally with your Swiss half fare card. Your Husband/wife/partner can be loaded to your Swiss pass card too.

The highlights for us were visiting the Schilthorn at 2970m and taking 4 cable cars to reach the top. We ate in the revolving restaurant, Piz Gloria and visited the James Bond Museum. It’s so interesting and explains how James Bond - Her Majesties Secret Service was filmed on the top of the Schilthorn all those years ago. Many of the European peaks are visible from the viewing platform too. It really is something.

Day 2: We took the narrow-gauge train out of Lauterbrunnen station to Wengen. The train snakes up the steep mountain side with incredible views. Make sure you bring a picnic and dine in the most incredible picnic spot overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley. It doesn’t get much better than this.

On Day 3 we headed for The Kleine Scheidegg which is a mountain pass at an elevation of 2,061m. It’s the last stop before the top of Europe - Jungfraujoch. The fare is €70 or €35 with the half fare card. It’s a big skiing area and the mountains vistas are breathtaking again and lots of snow to play in when we travelled in May. You can go to the top of Europe on another 3 cable cars from here but it’s approx. €120 each to go to the top.

The Swiss lakes are a must see too and there’s a magnificent viewing platform over Lake Brienz and Lake Thun reached by an 8 min funicular. But don’t forget to get in a boat and get on the water. The ferry’s run up and down the lake throughout the day and some are paddle steamers. The views again are incredible, and the water is an amazing glacial aqua blue/green colour.

It’s an incredibly beautiful place and everything is so easily accessible. This does come with a cost but if it’s your Honeymoon you will most definitely be able to justify it and I promise it’s worth it.
