Quackers about Boston!

Rachael Higgins 24 July 2019
Our adventure started in the city of Boston, just over a 6-hour flight – direct from Dublin with Delta Airlines whom offered a great and very comfortable service.

America’s oldest city is charming. It has bags of character within its different districts, but best of all it is a fairly small city, so you can pretty much walk all of it and that is exactly what we did…. Although for a small city there was so much to see and do, it's hard to know where to start…so here are some of my highlights:

- Boston Common is such a beautiful park in the centre of the city. Perfectly manicured gardens abundant with bird and wildlife. You will find lots of families here during the day, particularly around the frog pond (a paddling pool for kids) and carousel. Also, lots of Bostonians relaxing during their lunch break or on their way home from work.

- The New England Aquarium is a wonderful way to spend a few hours. Myrtle (a turtle) in the ‘Great Ocean Tank’ was our favourite of the day, but there are so many exhibits, including the penguins, seals, shark and ray touch tank (don’t worry they are only small!) plus lots more. Great for all ages, but a really good option for families.

- Of course, when in Boston you have to go ‘where everyone knows your name!’ The original and iconic Cheers Bar can be found in Beacon Hill. It has a great vibe and it worth popping in for a drink or two; just keep in mind this bar was the inspiration for the series, so it wasn’t filmed here and looks quite different to the set.

- Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall both located downtown this spot is great for shopping, eating and entertainment. Faneuil Hall is part of the famous ‘Freedom Trail’ and is an interesting spot. Its currently being restored, but you can still go inside and up to the Great Hall where free talks are given throughout the day telling the history of this building which was most significant in Boston’s history. Quincy Market and the surrounding area has some great eateries as well as lots of talented street entertainers… a stop in the market is a must for great seafood at a good price.

- Ducks! Ducks are a bit of a theme in Boston, we loved the bronze statues of Mrs Mallard and her 8 ducklings in the Public Garden and indeed the famous Duck Tour is a great way to see the city.

We stayed in the Back-Bay neighbourhood, which is perfect for shopping and dining. Many of the streets in the area are residential with beautiful old brick town houses. The streets are lined with trees and there are lots of designer shops and great restaurants. Stephanie’s on Newbury Street is a great spot for breakfast and if you are there early enough you might see the ‘Birdman of Newbury street’ whistling and feeding the sparrows by hand. Another favourite was ‘Atlantic Fish’ on Boylston Street. Always busy, but the staff are very accommodating, and their food is mouth-wateringly good!

Boston is a great city, and I hope to be back, but it was just the start of our New England Adventure… Part two of my blog will follow soon!
