Flying with Turkish Airlines, step into a world where centuries-old traditions blend seamlessly with the futuristic pulse of modern life. This 11-day small-group adventure through Japan is more than a holiday, it’s a cultural immersion. From temple stays in the mountains to the bright lights of Tokyo, every moment has been carefully curated to give you an authentic and unforgettable experience of Japan.

Classic Japan with Intrepid

Kyoto

Begin your journey in Kyoto, Japan’s cultural capital. With three nights to explore, you’ll uncover the magic of ancient shrines, peaceful zen gardens, and traditional teahouses. Watch for geisha gliding through the lantern-lit alleyways of Gion, and be sure to visit the vibrant torii gates of Fushimi Inari. Kyoto’s charm lies in its quiet elegance, a place where the past is beautifully preserved.

Koyasan

Next, journey to sacred Mount Koya for a truly unique experience, a temple stay in the spiritual heart of Shingon Buddhism.

Surrounded by misty forests and ancient cedar trees, you’ll stay in traditional temple lodgings and enjoy a peaceful vegetarian dinner prepared by monks. Visit the hauntingly beautiful Okunoin cemetery and join morning prayers for a deeply moving start to the day.

This overnight stay offers quiet reflection and connection in a place like no other.

Hiroshima

Then it’s on to Hiroshima, a city that has transformed tragedy into a symbol of peace and resilience.

Visit the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, stand in quiet contemplation before the A-Bomb Dome, and hear stories that inspire hope. You’ll also enjoy a day trip to the enchanting island of Miyajima, home to the ‘floating’ torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine.

In the evening, tuck into Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki with your group, a local favourite layered with flavour and warmth.

Tsumago

Your adventure slows in Tsumago, one of Japan’s best-preserved post towns on the ancient Nakasendo trail.

Stay in a traditional ryokan where tatami mats, futons, and onsen baths create a restful, authentic experience. Explore cobbled streets untouched by time, and walk a scenic section of the Nakasendo between Tsumago and Magome, where mountain views and quiet forests surround you.

This is rural Japan at its most charming and peaceful.

Matsumoto

From Tsumago, travel to the alpine town of Matsumoto, known for its striking original castle, one of Japan’s oldest.

Explore this beautiful ‘Crow Castle’, wander its moat-side gardens, and enjoy the fresh mountain air. The town is also a gateway to the Japanese Alps and offers a taste of traditional crafts and locally made soba noodles.

Tokyo

Your journey ends in Tokyo, a dazzling contrast of old and new where ancient shrines sit beside neon skylines.

Over two nights, explore its vibrant neighbourhoods, from the bustle of Shibuya and Shinjuku to the calm of Asakusa’s Senso-ji Temple. Cruise the Sumida River, wander through historic gardens, and discover hidden alleyways serving sizzling yakitori and fresh sushi.
