Whitewashed architecture, cobbled alleys and splendid beaches, whether on its picture-postcard islands or on the mainland, along with the most delicious Mediterranean cuisine, make this classic holiday destination a brilliant spot for a relaxing getaway.

Atmospheric ruins and mesmerising museums are a history lover's dream, while over 1000 Greek islands leave travellers spoilt for choice with an abundance of azure beaches and diving opportunities. This cultural treasure trove can be enjoyed alongside traditional tavernas serving delicious Greek food accompanied by an ouzo or two under the stars.

The largest and most populated Greek island, Crete pairs stunning beaches (Platanias and Elafonsi) with thousands of years of history (Europe’s oldest city - Knossos), and for a romantic break away on this lovely island, couples can’t go wrong with the five-star Daios Cove Luxury Resort and Villas.

TC Recommends… Daios Cove Luxury Resort and Villas

Blending into its incredible natural surroundings, Daios Cove is focused on a gorgeous-heated infinity pool with dazzling sea views. As well as a tempting array of off-site excursions, this resort has its own packed roster of activities including kayaking, scuba-diving, yoga and Pilates.

Another Greek region that goes down well with young families is Halkidiki. With its unspoilt landscape and hills carpeted with wildflowers, not to mention over 300 miles of beautiful white-sand coastline, it is undoubtedly one of the most family-friendly Greek regions.

TC Recommends… Sani Resort

The hub of the resort is the glamorous Marina with its upscale restaurants, bars and boutiques. Aside from this, there’s 7km of glorious beaches, five unique spas, a vast array of sports and activities, crèches and kids’ clubs for ages four months through to 17, a new Adventure Park with zip-lines and challenge bridges, and an incredible 24 restaurants and 17 bars.

The volcanic island of Santorini is renowned for its cliffside towns and villages, with dazzling-white buildings and Instagram-worthy sunsets, as well as it's Nea Kameni hot springs and prehistoric ruins.

TC Recommends… Mystique, a Luxury Collection Hotel

Ideal for romantic escapes, Mystique, a Luxury Collection Hotel, lays carved into the rugged cliffs overlooking the azure waters of the Aegean Sea. Thanks to its subtle colour palette and well-considered design, the hotel has an airy feel and a carefree spirit which complements its exclusive nature. The 41 luxurious suites and villas are linked by a network of cobbled pathways and each offer unobscured views out across the sea.

A summer getaway to Corfu is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the island's eclectic culture following years of influence from Venetian, French and British rulers. The picturesque island is defined by it's rugged mountain slopes which plunge rapidly into the azure waters of the Ionian Sea.

TC Recommends… Domes Miramare, a Luxury Collection Resort

This sophisticated adults-only property, in a Modernist building that was once owned by the Onassis family, offers suites that open onto olive groves and lush gardens, or the alluring shores of the Ionian Sea. A must for water-sports fans, with wake-boarding, scuba-diving and tubing all on offer, it’s also a hit with foodies for its Greek and Venetian- influenced cuisine by a Michelin starred chef.

Turquoise seas, exclusive hotels and perennial sunshine make Mykonos one of the Mediterranean’s most sought- after locations. The island sits decorated by thatched-roofed windmills which have become an integral part of the landscape, and blue-domed churches surrounded by pretty manicured gardens.

TC Recommends... Katikies Mykonos

Perched above the sun-kissed beach of Agios Ioannis in Mykonos, Katikies Mykonos, member of the Leading Hotels of the World – is indeed a cosy and intimate spot, with airy suites and villas overlooking the shimmering sea. Mixing contemporary décor and authentic local elements, accommodation can include a pool or open air-jetted tub, though it’s the amazing service from the authentically hospitable staff that makes this place truly shine.

Enjoying around 300 days of sunshine every year with no less than 30 miles of pristine golden beaches along the east coast, Rhodes is a great shout for some rest and relaxation. History fans will fall in love with its romantic Old Town - one of the best-preserved Medieval Towns of Europe, boasting strong walls, a majestic castle, paved paths and elegant stone mansions.

TC Recommends…. Gennadi Grand Resort

This eco-friendly resort is a peaceful hideaway perfect for a holistic retreat – not least due to its spa with its thalassotherapy massage ‘journeys’. Staying fit is easy here, with walks on the hotel’s sustainable green roof, aerial yoga and Pilates in the lush grounds, a range of exhilarating beach-sports and golf at the nearby Afandou course. A kids’ club for ages 4–14 years keeps younger visitors amused, and there’s a children’s pool in addition to three outdoor freshwater pools and one indoor heated pool.

Along with Rhodes, Kos is one of the larger islands of the Dodecanese complex, known for its abundant sandy beaches, endless coasts with turquoise waters, lush valleys and olive groves, as well as the impressive Italian buildings.

TC Recommends… Ikos Aria

Michelin-starred menus, a serene spa, calming rooms and suites – some with private pools – and childcare for all ages from four months and up, including beach sessions, means everyone enjoys themselves at this elegant property. Activities featured in your all-inclusive package include HIIT, Tabata, an introductory diving lesson, wind-surfing and mountain-biking. Dining options are equally wide-ranging, taking you from Kos and wider Greece to Asia via Provence and Italy.

Skiathos and neighbouring Sporades island, Skopelos, found fame in the 2008 film Mamma Mia! based on the ABBA stage play. The island’s main town, Skiathos Town, has a youthful, party vibe and vibrant nightlife, with bars and restaurants spilling down to the waterfront. Its harbourside is crowded with cocktail bars, restaurants, and boutique shopping. Yet, this little island also has some of the best beaches in the Aegean, clear blue bays and emerald, pine-clad hills.

TC Recommends... Princess Resort Skiathos

This family-friendly resort occupies a stunning beachfront location; a vast choice of à la carte restaurants serving fresh local dishes; luxurious accommodations in a range of categories; water sports and signature Juliette Armand spa treatments inspired by the region. There are ample activities, from the complimentary kids’ club to cooking lessons and guided hikes.
