My South Africa Adventure

Rosemary Chawke on 25 Mar 2021

South Africa is a destination I recommend again and again: dramatic coastlines, buzzing cities, winelands and safari. I even chose it for my own honeymoon, paired with a blissful beach escape in Mauritius.

South Africa: The World In One Country

Travel in South Africa feels like stepping into a different postcard every few days. One moment you are watching the sun sink behind Table Mountain, the next you are driving through rolling vineyards, spotting elephants on a sunrise game drive, or breathing in the fresh ocean air along the Garden Route. It is truly “the world in one country” and it remains my number one holiday destination.

Cape Town: Where Your Journey Begins

Camps Bay

I usually recommend starting in Cape Town for the first few nights. The V&A Waterfront area is a fantastic base: it feels safe, is very central for sightseeing, and has a great choice of hotels, shops, bars and restaurants.

From here, there is so much for you to experience:

  • Glide up Table Mountain by cable car for panoramic views over the city and ocean.
  • Take a boat trip out to Robben Island and learn more about Nelson Mandela’s story.
  • Spend a day (or even an overnight stay) in the nearby winelands, sampling world‑class wines and long, lazy lunches among the vineyards.

Cape Town also offers excellent shopping as well as a buzzing food and drink scene, with something to suit every taste and budget.

The Garden Route: Road Trip Heaven

Garden route

After a couple of days in Cape Town, I highly recommend hiring a car and driving the famous Garden Route. They drive on the same side of the road as we do, so it feels reassuringly familiar.  We felt so safe and loved having the freedom of the car to stop off wherever we wanted along the way. Along the Garden route you can enjoy beautiful national parks, quirky towns and ostrich farms and long sandy beaches with unbelievable viewpoints.

It is the perfect self‑drive, with plenty of places to stop off for walks, wildlife, good food and those unforgettable South African sunsets with a favourite tipple in hand.

Safari: The Ultimate South African ExperienceSafari Experience

No trip to South Africa is complete without a safari. Spending a couple of nights in a luxury game lodge was one of the real highlights for us.

Typically, a 2‑night stay works very well and includes all your meals, twice daily game drives with expert rangers and the chance to spot the famous Big Five.

There is nothing quite like the thrill of an early‑morning game drive, wrapped in a blanket with a hot drink, watching the bush come to life.
