Our Honeymoon in Venice and Celebrity Cruise

Susan Hegarty 15 September 2012
We left Rome the day after our wedding and took a direct train to Venice. This was a nice way to see the Italian countryside and quite relaxing. We opted for first class tickets which gave us more room and more storage for our luggage as well as a snack and a glass of wine.

After much consideration we had settled on a cruise for our honeymoon. We’ve had wonderful cruises in the past and it’s an ideal way to see so many places with a touch of luxury and lots of facilities.

The train brought us right into the centre of Venice. Our first sight of the city was amazing, it really is as gorgeous as I had imagined and very romantic. The perfect start to a honeymoon!

After a lot of research I had settled on The Ad Place Hotel for our 2 night stay. Venice, like lots of places in Italy, can be very expensive and difficult to find a good quality hotel in. Ad Place is a beautiful small boutique hotel a few minutes walk from St Mark’s Square. We had pre-booked a private water taxi from the train station and I’m so glad we did. It was quite the James Bond experience cruising down the canal taking in the sights and sounds! Our room was just gorgeous with a four poster bed and chilled prosecco waiting for us on arrival, we had a canal view where the passing singing gondoliers serenaded us to sleep!

The following day we were out early enjoying the relative calmness of a Sunday morning in Venice watching the locals walking their dogs and reading their newspapers in the numerous cafes that lined the canals. We walked all of the way to the cruise port where our ship, the Celebrity Silhouette, was already docked. We would be boarding her the following day and already I could feel the excitement building! We wandered back to the centre of Venice passing through real Venetian neighbourhoods with the scents and sounds of the locals preparing Sunday lunch, laundry hanging out of their windows and well fed cats on the doorsteps. We stopped for pasta and wine before getting hopelessly lost in the endless maze of streets that are Venice. There really is nowhere that compares to it, what a wonderful way to spend a day!

The following day we boarded our ship and it was absolutely gorgeous. It is modern and stylish but in no way pretentious or stuffy. We opted for a concierge balcony cabin which was perfect for a honeymoon with extras like priority boarding, sparkling wine, fresh flowers and a pillow menu among others perks. This was a 12 night cruise taking in Bari, Slovenia, Split, Dubrovnik, Montenegro, Malta, Sicily and two days in Naples. Highlights were the absolutely stunning Dubrovnik and its gorgeous coastline, Montenegro, Malta and our trip to Capri when we were in Naples. We met some fantastic people, enjoyed sumptuous food and excellent facilities and made the most of our beverage package with plenty of afternoon cocktails, champagne and after dinner martinis.

This was a dream honeymoon with memories that will last a lifetime.
