This year I went camping for the first time with my family and we discovered that we loved it !
We flew from Dublin to Treviso Airport and had a very easy transfer by coach (approximately 2 hours) which dropped us at the entrance to Camping Ca’ Savio on the Venetian Riviera. We do not like driving whilst on holiday so this was one of the reasons I choose this particular campsite as it is near to loads of amenities. It is also possible to arrange a private transfer from the airport which will cost you more but it is an option to think about.
We stayed in a 3 bedroom mobile home which was comfortable, spacious and very private. We loved the relaxed atmosphere of the place. The location in a pine-wood and it is beautiful and shaded. This keeps the temperature nice and cool during the heat of the day and while you are enjoying lunch on your deck. You feel like you are living in the woods, there were even squirrels and rabbits running around. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and felt very safe, I would definitely recommend for families with younger children.
The site has two pool areas each made up of several smaller pools, the smaller children absolutely loved the pirate ship and the pools have fantastic lifeguards who are very attentive and ensure everyone is safe which I felt very reassured by, knowing the children could play safely.
There is direct access to a lovely beach, again with life guards and there are lots of access points to the beach so it’s never too far wherever you are on the site. The beach is probably one of the nicest I have seen, considering it was high season it was never very busy, always plenty of space to find a spot for your towels and buckets and spades. The sea is very shallow, very safe for kids and very well monitored by the life guards.
There are lots of activities for kids of every age group throughout the day, which are well organised and run by very enthusiastic Staff. There are also organised activities for adults like yoga, pool aerobics and a gym. There is a very good supermarket on site which stocks everything you need.
This is a very large site and I would definitely recommend hiring bikes, great for the kids to get around without having to walk long distances. We also enjoyed fantastic cycle paths outside the camping site which are safe and a lovely way to see the surrounding area.
There are some lovely shops and restaurants in the town of Ca ‘Savio which is a 10 minute walk from the campsite. It was nice going in to have a wonder around, we ate out at Villa Gentile a couple of nights and they have a wood fired pizza oven. I didn't have pizza but the others said it was the best they ever had. We also tried the restaurant outside the campsite called Al Funghetti which was excellent. After dinner it is compulsory to join the Italian families at one of the local cafés for a gelato and a night cap. We would try a new flavour every night and still didn't get to sample them all.
Venice is so easily accessible from the campsite we managed a number of trips, both in the day and also at night time.
We purchased a 7 day boat pass for 50 Euros each and this included all the water boats taking you to and around Venice and all the islands. We used this ticket most days, sometimes just going into Venice for dinner in the evening and then catching the 11pm boat back to Ca' Savio. The boat journey took 35 minutes, so with getting to and from the campsite it took approximately an hour to get into the centre of Venice.
Use this boat ticket as a site-seeing tour also; you can jump on the Number 1 from the Vaporetto stop in St Mark's square. This will take you all the way up and around The Grand Canal. There is no need to get off anywhere if you don't want to, just soak up all the sights and sounds! We did this trip in the daytime and then repeated it one night time after dark for a completely different experience. All this is included in the 50 euros week pass - excellent value for money.
The customer care office near reception sorted our tickets out for us which made it very easy. You can cycle or get the bus to Punta Sabbioni and from there you take a boat to Venice. It’s a fabulous boat ride going past the lagoon islands and seeing the Lido and you are dropped in St Mark’s Square. Venice to me is one of the most beautiful places on this planet. Magical, romantic and utterly spell binding. All you have to do is to walk around and absorb the beauty of the place.
We also took the water bus to the islands of Burano and Murano, which are both worth an afternoon excursion. If you have do have a car Verona is worth a trip and is a 2 hour drive away.
So, if you are looking for a great family holiday that offers lots of relaxation, good weather and with spectacular sightseeing I can't think of anywhere better than Ca'Savio. There's a real feel good factor on this site. Not only that I think you genuinely get great value for money.
This campsite is full of happy memories with my family and we will definitely return.
Tip 1; Take plenty of insect repellent as the campsite is surrounded by trees Tip 2; For a day trip take the Marco Polo boat into Venice only E 9.50 return and wander around the back streets at your leisure. Tip 3; Take a sun umbrella with you because there are none for hire on the beach
