California welcomes visitors from across the world for a variety of different reasons. Some visit for the stunning weather, some for the delicious food, while others visit to bask in the laid-back atmosphere and soak up the cool vibes. Whatever your reason for visiting, we’ve got a few tips to make your time there extra special.
Covering over 163,000 sq miles, California is one massive state. The best way to see all that it has to offer is to get on four wheels (or two if you’re a biker) and hit the open road, ticking off iconic routes such as Pacific Coast Highway and Route 66 as you go.
A lot of people fall into the trap of solely visiting the tourist hotspots when they visit Cali, but there’s unimaginable riches to be found in the Golden State if you veer off the beaten track and explore the path less trodden.
The sun-kissed beach town of Santa Cruz County is world renowned for its excellent surf conditions. Home to 29 miles of stunning coastline, dotted with golden beaches, there’s no shortage of places to catch some breakers. If getting out on the waves isn't your cup of tea then visit the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum (pictured) to learn about the history of the sport in the USA.
Santa Monica’s boardwalk serves up a kaleidoscope of colours and activities for you to enjoy. From its unmistakable pier and famous Ferris wheel to its electic cafes and the Original Muscle Beach. The best way to see it all is by rollerblading or simply strolling along the front at your own leisurely pace.
As one of the oldest and most established China Towns in the world, you could be forgiven for thinking you were on the other side of the Pacific when you walk the streets beyond the Dragon’s Gate. For a real taste of Cantonese cuisine here order up some delicious Dim Sum and let your taste buds be taken on a journey.
Sonoma County has such a broad range of landscapes and attractions that it’s hard to decide where to visit. We recommend heading to the coast to explore the rock pools, look for crabs and gaze out to sea in search of colonies of harbour seals.
After a day spent in the majesty of Yosemite National Park, head to 1850 Restaurant and Brewing Company to try their delicious craft beer selection, which comes expertly paired with the food, and mingle with the locals to share tales of your day out in the rugged wilderness.
The cosmopolitan Newport Beach is well known for its upmarket harbourside bars and boutique shopping. For something different, join a whale watching boat trip for your chance to spot one of nature’s giants. It’s a magical experience that you’ll never forget.
San Diego is home to a truly delectable dining scene that has something for everyone. Our favourite way to see the finest fare the city produces is to enlist the help of an expert and allow them to guide you through a diverse array of foods that may just make you want to stay in San Diego forever.
Visit in July and you’ll see a lake scattered with revellers paddle boarding or kayaking across the lakes shimmering surface as the warm summer sun beats down. Visit in December and you’ll get a very different experience as from the same viewpoint, you’ll see skiers come whizzing down the snow-covered mountain slopes and other visitors wrap up warm to enjoy this winter wonderland.
As the recipient of three Michelin stars, French Laundry in Yountville, Napa Valley, is reason enough to visit this beautiful wine-growing region. Serving up exquisite French cuisine against the backdrop of luscious vineyards, French Laundry is a must visit for foodies.
