Jamaica’s lush tropical landscape makes this Caribbean island no stranger to lovers of the outdoors, with plenty of beauty spots and fascinating animals in their natural habitats to discover. Take a look at our top ten ways to see sights that capture the essence of Jamaica and all that it has to offer.
This popular spot in Ocho Rios is shrouded in natural beauty with rocks to climb up to the top of the falls under a shaded green canopy. The mountain waters cascade down the rocks over the natural terraced steps, which movie fanatics will recognise from the James Bond movie Dr. No and Cocktail starring Tom Cruise. Once you’ve reached the top you can while away the hours floating in the waters of the rock pools.
There’s an abundance of botanical gardens all around the island, our favourite is Hope Botanical Gardens in St Andrew where you can see exotic flowers and plants and the rare Hibiscus Elatus. This is the national tree of Jamaica with flowers that open in the morning in primrose yellow and change to hues of orange and red as the day progresses.
Budding ornithologists will be in their element as Jamaica is home to around 200 resident species of bird. The national bird, the Red-Billed Streamertail Hummingbird only lives in Jamaica and along with spotting these, you might also be lucky enough to see the Yellow-Billed and Black-Billed parrot.
Head inland and take one of the walking trails up the mystifying Blue Mountains. Here you can find the Holywell Recreational Centre where there are plenty of activities including a coffee plantation tour, picnic areas, hiking trails and spectacular scenery to take in.
Hop on board a traditional bamboo raft and take an hour-long guided sail down the Martha Brae, where you will be able to drink in the sights and listen to the legend of the river. The river is beautiful and peaceful and it’s the perfect way to see more of inland Jamaica.
Take an exhilarating ATV ride over the diverse terrain of Jamaica and see the Caribbean in the most adrenaline-inducing way, from the rugged trails to the untouched hills, this is not for the faint-hearted but it’s an extremely rewarding way to see the beauty of the island.
Thrill seekers can take in Jamaica’s impressive mountainous landscape from a different point of view with a zip line tour over the treetops.
Enjoy one of the famous ‘Beach and Swim’ horse rides, where you can discover the island on horseback on a shaded trail followed by riding into the shallows of the Caribbean Sea.
Make your way to Rockfort Mineral Bath Complex where you’ll find a network of private plunge pools known for their healing benefits and unwind with a cooling dip in these natural pools.
Ascend to this legendary spot where you can learn the romantic tale of two star-crossed lovers who ran away together and leapt from the cliff into a golden net. On Sunday evenings the party starts in the afternoon where there’s live reggae music dancing and watching the sun set into the sea.
