No matter if you’re seeking a snow adventure or a more tropical escape, banish those winter blues and join us as we explore some of the best destinations to visit whether you’re looking for a sun-drenched escape or winter wonderland.
With December highs of 29 degrees and a lush tropical landscape perfect for exploring in the sun, Saint Lucia makes for a gorgeous winter getaway where you can spend days on the beach or snorkelling in the warm seas. There are plenty of nature reserves and wildlife areas to discover, and adrenaline junkies can even try their hand at scaling the mighty Pitons mountains.
“The natural landscape of unspoiled rainforest, waterfalls and breathtaking views around every corner in Saint Lucia are just stunning. The majestic twin peaks of the Pitons dominate the south and the soaring mountains descend as far underwater as they rise above it, making the area particularly interesting for diving and snorkelling. We loved this beautiful island and hope to return this winter for some sun.”
On the other hand, Lapland is the ultimate winter escape. Perfect for families looking for a magical winter experience, you can try husky sledging, visiting the elves’ workshop and of course, meet Santa Claus. If you’re lucky you may even get to see the Northern Lights dance across the skies too, but wrap up warm as temperatures can drop as low as -6 degrees.
“It felt like we had been placed literally on top of the world, the scenery is unlike anywhere else I have experienced with the sun peeking above the horizon, creating a wonderful pink sky above the pure white landscape. The area is flat, with snow-covered forests and lakes. Everything felt pure and fresh and there was a stillness that filled the air creating the perfect winter wonderland – the kids were in their element.”
Sun-kissed Antigua is perfect any time of year, but in December you can expect temperatures of around 28 degrees, ideal for escaping the winter chill. With 365 sandy beaches and plenty of beach bars to unwind in, you’ll be able to sip on a cooling cocktail rather than mulled wine and there are plenty of activities too from zip-lining through the verdant rainforest to hiking the diverse terrains.
For the ski holiday of a lifetime, Aspen is a must, with a dense blanket of snow covering the area between October and May. Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or advanced skier there are plenty of runs to try out on the picturesque world-class slopes, and après ski opportunities are endless with the resort’s lively scene – after a day on the runs head to one of the bars for truffle fries and hot chocolate on the terrace in the winter sun.
Due to its proximity to the equator, the temperature in Sri Lanka rarely fluctuates, meaning you’re pretty much guaranteed warm weather whenever you choose to visit. If you’re looking for a far-flung winter adventure Sri Lanka is the perfect destination, try water sports in the warm seas and celebrate Christmas in Negombo where the locals decorate their houses in true festive style and celebrate with music, dancing and feasts.
Slovenia’s fairytale landscape looks like something straight from a Christmas card in the winter months, and you can experience just that if you head to Lake Bled, where a Winter Fairytale is set up on the promenade. Snack on traditional food and drinks from the region, wander through the streets illuminated with fairy lights and watch the snow glisten on top of the beautiful castle in the distance. The dusting of snow makes this spot even more magical at this time of year.
Experience laid-back Caribbean culture at the most wonderful time of the year with a winter trip to Barbados. You’ll enjoy nine hours of sunshine and temperatures rarely dip below 25 degrees, so you can relax on the beach, sip rum cocktails and listen to relaxing reggae beats. A favourite with foodies, make sure you try Barbadian favourites such as fresh seafood and macaroni pie and take advantage of the plentiful diving opportunities too, as there are hundreds of gorgeous reefs to explore in the calm waters.
If you’re looking for a snowy city break, Budapest is an ideal choice. There’s plenty to explore in this Hungarian city and the local cuisine offers soups and stews guaranteed to warm your soul. If you feel like doing something a little out of the ordinary, head to the outdoor thermal baths and plunge into the steaming waters while the snow falls around you but be warned – it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted.
