Sun, Culture and Paradise with Meliá Hotels

29 November 2021

From Europe to the Caribbean coast of Mexico, Meliá’s hotels around the world - more than 350 in 35 countries - stand out for their genuine hospitality and sense of place. We’ve shared some our favourites from this world-leading Spanish group.

Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora, Tenerife

On the beachfront between the Atlantic Ocean and soaring Mount Teide, this luxury hotel is perfect whatever time of year you choose to visit, with the island’s reliable winter sunshine making the season ideal for activities that are even more enjoyable outside of high summer, including hiking and dolphin- or whale-watching.

Palacio de Isora’s proximity to several local golf courses makes it popular with those looking to put in some time on the greens, while on-site activities include star-gazing with the resident astronomer, yoga, Pilates and tai chi, tennis at the academy, and swimming in one of five pools, including the longest saltwater infinity pool of any European hotel –something that helps the resort to blend in with its stunning natural environment.

Rooms, suites and villas vary in decor from classic to contemporary and include two-bedroom options for families. The RedLevel experience is an adults-only exclusive boutique hotel within the resort, or there’s RedLevel for Families with superior facilities and services for those travelling with kids. There’s also a kids’ club, a sleek spa and a tempting array of dining options, ranging from paella at the pool grill and avant-garde Italian to Japanese.

Hotel Villa Agrippina, a Gran Meliá Hotel, Rome

On the site of the expansive villa of the same name built by Agrippina Major 2000 years ago, this uniquely atmospheric property evokes the luxurious lifestyle of the ancient Roman resort. It’s also within walking distance of all of Rome’s main attractions and sites – including Trastevere, Campo de’ Fiori Square and Navona Square – and is indeed the closest hotel to the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel.

Villa Agrippina is also rare among Roman hotels for its outdoor pool and sun-deck, where you’ll also find the Gala Pool Bar & Restaurant with its cocktails, nibbles and nutritious dishes – an unforgettable venue for romantic dinners by the water. Meanwhile, The Ossimoro Restaurant and Amaro Cocktail Bar offers fine dining with wine pairings, based on local produce.

Indeed, despite its stunning location, Villa Agrippina has plenty to keep you onsite, including gardens threaded with pathways lined by plants that were popular with the ancient Romans, such as bay laurel, myrtle, rosemary, strawberry tree and lentisk.  These, in turn, are used in the delicious Roman and Italian recipes served in the restaurants. There’s also the indulgent Spa My Blend by Clarins offering outstanding, exclusive beauty and wellness treatments based on pure plant extracts and aromatic oils. Again, the RedLevel Experience offers tailor-made experiences to enhance your stay.

Paradisus Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya

This all-inclusive all-suite gem is nestled amidst mangroves on Mexico’s eastern shore, at the former sleepy fishing village of Playa del Carmen with its famous beaches and coral reefs and its nearby cenotes (sinkholes) and Mayan ruins – a location making it perfect for both relaxation and adventure.

Enriching experiences that will help get you under the skin of this tropical nirvana include wine and tequila tastings and dance lessons, while the cuisine served in no fewer than 22 restaurants and bars (five of which have won the Wine Spectator Award for Excellence) embraces both authentic local fare and specialities from around the world. Virtually everything is covered by your package, including dining and entertainment. Fun for all ages comes in the guise of a water park and sparkling free-form swimming pools with a swim-up bar and poolside grill.

Rooms are spacious, contemporary and chic, with natural stone and neutral tones setting the tone, and rainfall showers or hydromassage tubs. Some are swim-up for an added luxurious touch, and some have two bedrooms. For added luxury, you can upgrade to The Reserve with its private lounges, concierge service, and exclusive pool and beach area.
