Setting Sail into the World of Cruise

04 October 2017

If you’ve never cruised before, you might not be wanting risk your entire 2-week summer holiday (and your hard-earned money) on something you’re not sure of. But with many cruise lines offering itineraries from just one night, you can hit the high seas without too much commitment. We’re sure you’ll love it, but if you find it’s not for you, you’ll be back on dry land before you know it!

We’ve hand-picked some of these ‘mini-cruises’, so you can try one over a weekend, or incorporate it into a longer break, to ease you in to the world of cruising. So, without further ado, here’s a selection of short cruises to whet your appetite!

Chic city breaks

Ranging from two nights to five, instead of jetting off to Hamburg, Bruges or Amsterdam, or another European favourite, why not sail your way overseas? It’s much more relaxing than traipsing through the airport, plus, the views from your cabin beat the views from 35,000 feet up. Once you reach your destination, take part in one of the 45 excursions on offer, or explore the city at your own pace.

North American Add-ons

Looking for a way to add a little something extra to your Stateside adventure? Carnival cruise lines offer a number of 1-4 night cruises from ports across the US and Canada. Plus, at such fabulous prices, you won’t be putting too much at risk! From Florida, the Caribbean Sea is calling your name: sail away to the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Mexico to name a few. Or if you’re in the Big Apple, head out to Bermuda or sail along the stunning New England coastline as you head north to Canada.

If you’re more West-cost than East, you can jump on a Holland-America Line’s cruise from Seattle, San Francisco or San Diego and head up the Pacific coast. It’s a journey many people choose to take by car (or campervan) but cruising offers a quicker alternative with decidedly different scenery and it means you don’t have to be trapped in the driver’s seat the whole way!

River cruises

If the open ocean isn’t calling your name, there are plenty of river cruises where you can see if the cruising life is for you. Avalon Waterways offer a one-way cruise along the beautiful Danube, stopping at 4 ports in three countries, you’ll see an awful lot in a short space of time, so there’s no chance you’ll get bored! Riviera travel offer a festive 5-day Rhine and Yuletide Markets cruise where you will sail through the dramatic Rhine gorge, which is most beautiful when the weather turns cold. Stopping at four towns along the river banks, you can enjoy the festivities, pick up Christmas gifts and of course enjoy a warm glass or two of local glühwein. Plus, Riviera travel provide a fabulous five-star experience, so there is no better way to introduce yourself to cruising… you’re sure to love it!

Discover far-flung shores

You’d be forgiven for imagining cruising is all about gigantic ocean liners and feeling like you’re living in a floating city. But cruising can be a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the culture of far-flung shores. Take Royal Caribbean’s selection of Far Eastern cruises: over two nights you can sail from Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland to Hong Kong, or cruise from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, or Penang. For four or five nights, discover Sasaebo, Nagasaki or Okinawa in Japan, Manila in the Philippines, Nha Trang in Vietnam, Taipei in Taiwan or Bangkok in Thailand… the list goes on!

If you’re even further from home, cruise from Sydney to Melbourne over 4 nights or Sydney to Tasmania over 5 nights. If you’re liking the sound of adding a cruise to an adventure down-under, embark at Sydney and sail out to the Loyalty Islands and New Caledonia in the South Pacific Ocean. It may be a 7-day voyage so not exactly ‘short’, but if you’re planning an adventure of a lifetime, it’s well worth it to explore a corner of the world many never get to see.

With every cruise, you can expect wonderfully attentive service from friendly staff, comfortable staterooms with fabulous views that change by the minute, impeccable dining from around the world and plenty of entertainment and activities to keep you busy when you’re not on shore.
