Our top day-trips from incredible cities

18 September 2018

City breaks are one of our favourite forms of travel. But some cities have amazing sights within easy reach that it would be a huge shame to miss. We’ve shared our pick of the top day-trips you can do from some of the best-loved city-break destinations.

Golden Circle from Reykjavik

While Iceland’s capital is fantastic in its own right, it’s also a gateway to many of Iceland’s incredible natural sights. One of the most popular trips is to the Golden Circle – a 300km sightseeing route laden with natural beauty and attractions, beginning about 40km from Reyjavik.

Tours follow different routes but most of them take in the main sights: Geysir with its erupting hot springs, the awe-inspiring Gullfoss waterfall and Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site straddling the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The route is also easy to self-drive if you hire a car.

“We booked ourselves on to the full-day Golden Circle tour and headed off to see some amazing sights. The highlights for me were the Gullfoss Waterfall, which seemed to be frozen in time and showed the sheer beauty and force of Mother Nature. Also, the Strokkur hot springs where you could freely wonder around this desolate landscape as the springs bubble up around you and the geysers erupt at regular intervals.”

The Atlas Mountains from Marrakesh

When you’ve navigated the maze-like souks and admired the lovely architecture of Marrakesh, enjoy Morocco at a slower pace with a day-trip to see the Berber villages, broad valleys and lush orchards that line the path to Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. Pause for tea in the Imlil Valley and hike up to the isolated village of Ait Souka to share a meal in a Berber family’s home. You can also combine your tour with a camel ride and hot-air ballooning.

San Marino from Emilia Romagna

Break your discovery of this lovely region (home to Ravenna with its UNESCO-listed Christian monuments, to beautiful Bologna, and to Parma ham, balsamic vinegar and Parmesan cheese) with an international day-trip Just south of Rimini, San Marino is one of only three countries in the world entirely surrounded by another nation. Atop Mount Titano, its capital City of San Marino with its steep cobblestone streets and pretty buildings is great to potter around. Stop by the Three Towers and the State Museum to learn more about this fascinating micro-nation.

Taj Mahal from New Delhi

Agra’s iconic marble mausoleum is an easy day-trip from the Indian capital four hours away by road, As well as learning the history of this global landmark, lovingly built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favourite wife, a tour will give you the chance to visit the 16th-century Agra Fort and the Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah or 'Baby Taj’.

Krka National Park from Split

Just over an hour from the one-time home of the Roman Emperor Diocletian (host to impressive architecture, excellent seafood restaurants and great beaches), you can swim at the foot of the Skradanski waterfall at Krka National Park. Other attractions at this reserve include the tiny island of Visovac with its monastery and historic hydroelectric plant converting the power of seven cascading waterfalls into energy.
