City breaks are one of our favourite forms of travel. But some cities have amazing sights within easy reach that it would be a huge shame to miss. We’ve shared our pick of the top day-trips you can do from some of the best-loved city-break destinations.
While Iceland’s capital is fantastic in its own right, it’s also a gateway to many of Iceland’s incredible natural sights. One of the most popular trips is to the Golden Circle – a 300km sightseeing route laden with natural beauty and attractions, beginning about 40km from Reyjavik.
Tours follow different routes but most of them take in the main sights: Geysir with its erupting hot springs, the awe-inspiring Gullfoss waterfall and Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site straddling the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The route is also easy to self-drive if you hire a car.
“We booked ourselves on to the full-day Golden Circle tour and headed off to see some amazing sights. The highlights for me were the Gullfoss Waterfall, which seemed to be frozen in time and showed the sheer beauty and force of Mother Nature. Also, the Strokkur hot springs where you could freely wonder around this desolate landscape as the springs bubble up around you and the geysers erupt at regular intervals.”

Pause for tea in the Imlil Valley and hike up to the isolated village of Ait Souka to share a meal in a Berber family’s home. You can also combine your tour with a camel ride and hot-air ballooning.
