Embrace the Caribbean Flair in Barbados

16 December 2020

With the world opening up again and regular flight schedules resuming as normal to far away destinations like Barbados, 2021 is the year for Bajan rum, rhythmic calypso music and fresh seafood.

Sandy Lane

A resort built on its legendary style, Sandy Lane encompasses a 47,000 square foot spa, voted the number one hotel spa in the Caribbean by Travel + Leisure; three golf courses, one of which is Tom Fazio's world-renowned Green Monkey; 113 rooms and suites and a lavish private villa that comes with its own dedicated staff of a butler, housekeeper and chef. The hotel’s beach makes up part of the ‘Platinum Coast’, the most prized stretch of sand on the island. Have the staff reserve your seat for a day on the white sands and let the personalised beachside service keep you refreshed with cold towels, tropical drinks, sorbets and fresh fruit. After a day in the sun, head to the roof terrace for a rum punch while you wait for dinner and let all the worries of home melt away as you take in the unobscured sea views. The 'Taste of the West Indies' menu at Bajan Blue features the fresh seafood that the island is famed for: seared tuna, pickled conch and steamed clams, alongside punchy appetisers and rum flavoured desserts.

The Sandpiper

The Sandpiper is managed by British couple, Wayne and Karen Capaldi, who have instilled an elegant feel throughout this boutique property without sacrificing its laidback Caribbean charm, exercising restraint in the décor of this small hotel, with just 45 rooms. Each room features a spacious outdoor terrace for al fresco dining or basking in the sun, and some have their own private plunge pool. The Tree Top Suites are The Sandpiper’s most luxurious options, with their spacious living rooms, separate dressing areas and en-suite bathrooms with walk-in shower and stand-alone bathtub. Outside each of the rooms are shell-shaped footbaths to help keep the beach out of your sheets.

Sea Breeze Beach House

Equally matched to families and couples, this fun beachside all-inclusive invites guests to dance to the sound of steel drums on the island’s southern coast. The vibrant colourful décor extends from the rooms and suites, through to the five bars and restaurants. Soak up the Bajan culture on one of the hotel’s cultural activities which explores the blend of West African and British cultures that combine to create the spirit of Barbados. St. Nicholas Abbey is one of only three remaining Jacobean mansions in the Western hemisphere which, in a distinctly Barbadian twist, even has its own rum distillery. Every Monday and Wednesday night, the Harbour Lights Dinner Show brings the party atmosphere to Carlisle Bay with local dancers and live calypso bands performing all night.

The House by Elegant Hotels

This boutique, adults-only hotel prides itself on its ultra-luxury service. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be welcomed in and led to your room for the unpacking service and given the option of an included jet-lag massage to help ease you into your stay. Pampering perks include complimentary Champagne breakfast served daily on the open-air beachfront deck alongside delicious locally grown fruits and West Indian coffee. During the week, look out for the featured local artists who come to the hotel for an exclusive meet and greet and to showcase their artwork. Friday nights mean one thing in Barbados: the Oistins Fish Fry. The House runs a shuttle at 6pm to take guests for an authentic Bajan experience of live music and dancing – as the name suggests, the star of the show is the fresh seafood pulled straight from the Caribbean Sea that same day and cooked before you.

Good to know

At Sandy Lane, all 115 bedrooms, suites, penthouses and the villa underwent extensive restorations to ensure that they are in pristine condition ready for your arrival. At The Sandpiper the housekeepers will establish a preferred time for room servicing and turn down service when you expect to be out of your room and will increase sanitation procedures around touchpoints. By using mobile technology and enabling social and physical distancing practices, The House by Elegant Hotels has reduced contact between guests and staff while maintaining connection.
