Choose Malta for your next luxury outing

01 June 2021

For many destinations, having 300 days of sunshine per year would be the star attraction yet in Malta it merely sets the scene for the gems that you’ll find there. A cultural heritage dating back 7,000 years, a dining scene recognised with five Michelin stars and a clutch of opulent hotels for visitors to savour whilst the ever-present Maltese sunshine warms their skin.

Gastronomy

Traditional Maltese food is based around the seasons and bears influences from across the Mediterranean, brought to the archipelago by settlers over the centuries. The local ingredients grown across the country have helped to develop a vibrant gastronomy scene that draws on the traditions of Mediterranean, African and Arabic culinary styles to really stand out from the crowd. This seasonal approach to cooking is embodied in the new wave of farm to table dining that the island is enjoying, spearheaded by a group of young farmers that are revisiting old techniques and producing traditional vegetables.

In 2021, two new restaurants have been awarded the coveted Michelin star, bringing Malta’s total to five. Bahia and ION – The Harbour, join De Monidon, Noni and Under Grain as Malta’s elite culinary institutions.

Nowhere is the culmination of cultural influences more evident in culinary form than at Bahia where each dish is noted with the region or era in history that inspired it. Whether it be the confit guinea fowl, the freshly caught wild fish served with dolmades, or the scones with beetroot, the dishes come plated to artistic standards, ready to transport you around the world and through time.

The other newly awarded Michelin starred restaurant in Malta, ION – The Harbour, boasts some of the finest views on the island, looking out over The Grand Harbour from its rooftop setting atop Iniala Harbour House in Valletta. The menu of expertly curated dishes is elevated by a selection of wines, carefully chosen by the in-house sommelier, to pair beautifully with each meal.

If you have a passion for wine, the new Wine Trail is a must, especially given that you cannot buy Maltese wine in the UK. The trail highlights the finest vineyards across Malta and neighbouring Gozo, that are open to visitors and welcome you in for a taste of their creations. Head into the underground wine vaults at Monte Kristo, tour the stunning estate of Ta’ Betta or stop off at the Archipelago’s smallest vineyard, Tal-Massar, on Gozo.
