30 January 2020
February is something of a strange month, isn’t it? The excitement of the festive season has well and truly passed. Those fitness regimes and healthy eating habits we started in January are starting to wane. And, the mid-term holidays sneak into the middle of the month.
No matter that February is a mere 29 days long this year. In the midst of grey days, summer seems a long way off. Cheer everyone in the family up with a last-minute February getaway. Whether you’re hoping for glorious winter sun or icy temperatures for a spot of skiing and snowball fights, there are plenty of escapes awaiting you…
For February sunshine
Soak up mild temperatures and sunny afternoons in Malaga or Seville (temperatures are around 18˚C). Hoping for a dip in the sea? Head to the Canary Islands. The sea might still feel a little chilly but temperatures in Tenerife and Gran Canaria average 22˚C.
Seeking white sands, turquoise seas and balmy temperatures? Jet off to Cancún or Playa del Carmen on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. With an average of 11 hours of daylight and temperatures almost reaching 30˚C, Mexico is a perfect place for anyone seeking winter sunshine.
Dubai is a heady blend of glittering skyscrapers, pristine beaches, fascinating culture and rolling desert. Known for luxurious hotels, exquisite restaurants and shopping, Dubai has plenty to occupy all ages, from waterparks to museums to dune bashing adventures (4x4 driving experiences in the desert).
The range of activities available make Dubai a spectacular destination for both a long weekend or a longer break – and in February average day time temperatures are a very pleasant 24˚C.
Relax on white sands, explore tropical jungles and beautiful temples, and wander through buzzing cities on an adventure through Thailand. There’s a huge amount to discover in this captivating tropical location but a tour or two centre break means you can experience city life, beautiful beaches, culture and adventure. February is hot – temperatures are around 32˚C and humid – but the weather tends to be drier so it’s perfect for exploring the country.
What can you expect from the “Sunshine State” in February? Comfortable temperatures of around 24˚C, low humidity, and dry days with around 11 hours of daylight! Florida’s beaches are beautiful, so they’re perfect for anyone looking for warm weather. There’s plenty to see and do in the state, from exploring theme parks and national parks, to discovering the Florida Keys and vibrant Miami.
Nestled in the North Atlantic Ocean, on the west coast of North Africa, lie the volcanic Cape Verde islands. These 10 islands have a tropical climate, so they’re ideal for a spot of winter sun! Temperatures are around 25˚C in February.
For February snow and bright, crisp days
Pull on your boots, wrap up warm and hit the snow in the French Alps. If you’re a skier or snowboarder, there are plenty of resorts to explore but it’s not just about the ski slopes. Even if you’re not a fan of skiing, the picturesque snowy resorts offer other activities, such as horse-drawn sleigh rides and snowy walks, and the chance to unwind in a beautiful setting.
Nestled between Europe and the USA, Iceland is an island of breathtaking landscapes, a captivating blend of volcanoes, hot springs, and glaciers. The capital, Reykjavic, is one of the smallest cities in the world but it’s a charming destination for a winter break, with plenty to keep you occupied. Explore art galleries and museums, take a dip in one of the thermal pools, and explore the burgeoning restaurant scene. This time of year is also a perfect opportunity to spot the Northern Lights.
The Dolomites are known for their laidback ski resorts but cities in Italy are ideal for a winter escape, too. Rome, Milan, Florence and Venice tend to be less crowded than during the summer months, and the weather tends to be bright but crisp. You might have a couple of drizzling days but there are so many incredible museums and galleries to visit that you probably won’t even notice the weather!
Hoping for biting weather rather than drizzly days? Try Salzburg. With temperatures often below 0˚C, you’ll need to take lots of warm layers to keep you cosy as you explore this charming Austrian city. Wander around baroque and medieval architecture, see Mozart’s birthplace (now a museum), attend one of the many concerts, or head off for a spot of skiing.
