Begin your journey in Budapest and set sail to Esztergom, one of Hungary’s oldest towns, famous for its enormous basilica and boasting one of the world’s largest altarpieces. The best of provincial Hungary, little has changed since Habsburg times. As you cruise, enjoy a fascinating opportunity to compare the different landscapes, towns and villages of Hungary on one side of the river bank and of Slovakia on the other.
Explore Slovakia’s fast-emerging capital city, Bratislava, on a guided tour. A city that has rekindled the splendour of its imperial past in its beautifully restored Old Town. Later cruise into Lower Austria, home to some of the country’s best wines, before reaching Dürnstein… From here, be mesmerized by the remarkable Melk Abbey.
Reaching Linz, you will have the choice to stay in the city or drive to Salzburg. In the city take a guided walking tour, and explore the charming old town, and visit the finest squares in Austria. Alternatively, drive to Salzburg, where dominating the skyline is one of Europe’s largest stone fortresses, the Hohensalzburg, while beneath its lies the Altstadt, or Old Town. Then there’s the wonderful Hellbrunn Palace and the splendid formal gardens of the Mirabell Palace.
Sail to Vienna and take a stroll in the Prater, notable for its huge Ferris wheel. Or, for something different, visit the Schönbrunn Palace, a former royal residence now housing a range of world-class museums and galleries. Perhaps just take a stroll through Vienna’s atmospheric side streets, enjoy a coffee and a slice of delicious Sachertorte in one of the extraordinarily coffee houses, or admire the skill of the street entertainers. Later, cruise through Hungary’s peaceful landscape back towards Budapest. In this city, enjoy a sightseeing tour of the ‘Pearl of the Danube’, endless galleries, museums, outstanding architecture and excellent shopping offer a fittingly elegant end to your Danube cruise.
