Roman Holiday
Friday 10th September 2010

We travelled on direct service Dublin to Fuimicino for a long week-end and to see the sights and sounds that are in the “Eternal City ".
I had pre booked a private transfer to ease the commute as we were due to arrive into Rome late on a Friday night; transfer took about 30 minutes and was painless. We choose to stay at a 4* boutique style “The Twenty-One” situated between The Vatican and Spanish Steps we found this location to be perfect for all major sightseeing. A word of warning be prepared for huge queues to visit The Vatican Museum/Sistine Chapel, it is not uncommon to wait in line for 3 hours!
Rome is a stunning city and its ancient ruins sit nestled between hotels and shopping districts and their impact on the city is most dramatic at night time. The Coliseum backlight is a sight to behold and the Pantheon and St Peters Square are most romantic and appealing come dusk time. I would encourage this destination for any honeymoon couples and for those seeking an interesting and historical city break - Rome will impress on all levels.
The food in Rome is what you would expect, Pizzas/Pasta and Gellaterias ( ice cream cafes ) are everywhere, look off the beaten track to source a better eatery and you will be more than happy with the findings.
Like all major cities there are a few tourist traps with prices to match but move away and you get better value for your money. Transportation is cheap and cheerful if you like underground systems, taxis are plentiful if a bit too happy to overcharge - if in doubt ask first before agreeing a price. For fares to and from the airports ask for the set price.
Shoppers will be in heaven here, however mostly your designer brands at hugely inflated prices as one would expect e.g. Via Venetto. We came across the most amazing Italian delicatessens specialising in fine Italian wines.
Of course there is a reason that it is called the Holy City there are churches everywhere! So why not drop in and light a candle while admiring the stunning interiors and ornate art works within. Rome is not a cheap destination but don't let that spoil your trip; everyone should at some point visit this city which is rich in history and offers something interesting and unique to see at every corner.
