After a short two and a half hour flight from Shannon to Faro, our taxi took us to the 'Vila Galaeo' just outside the popular resort of Vilamoura on the Algarve coast. The Galaeo villas located side by side in a cul de sac of approx 40 villas. One has 4 bedrooms and the other 3. Car rental, in my opinion is essential here as the resort centre is approx 2 miles away.

Temperatures were quiet hot, reaching 32 degrees, very hot for that time of year but as the Algarve is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, it didn't seem unbearable with the cooling breeze!

The Algarve, to me, has retained much its culture compared to many of the alternative holiday resorts. Albufeira & Alvor in particular are charming resorts with fishing being very important to the local economy. For those seeking a more lively area, Praia da Rocha and Montechoro will fit the bill. There are plenty of bars, shops and restaurants to keep you busy and entertained.

A trip to Cap St Vincent is a must, the furthest western point of the Algarve. Views from here are amazing and as the wind is so strong here, you will find plenty 'adrenalin junkies' paragliding - a vision in itself!

As for Vilamoura, where we stayed, an excellent choice for those seeking a relaxed atmosphere, excellent cuisine (Lamboro one of my favourites!) and many top class golf courses.

There are many flights throughout the week operating late into the season making a shorter break possible so from a long weekend to a two week break, the Algarve offers so much more choice.
