Sharm el Sheikh
Thursday 8th March 2007

I have been lucky enough to visit this beautiful resort twice and cannot recommend it highly enough as a winter sun destination.
The first time that I went to Sharm el Sheikh, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I had already been to Luxor and Cairo to visit the Pyramids and the tombs and temples but had never been to the Red Sea.
Normally for a winter sun holiday I would visit one of the Canary Islands but found the weather had become quite unreliable. Because I was travelling with my husband and my young son, I still wanted to take a direct flight, so Sharm seemed like the perfect choice.
From the moment I arrived at the beautiful Radisson SAS hotel, I knew that I had made the right decision. The staff could not have been more welcoming and we received a refreshing glass of cold juice as soon as we walked through the door. I couldn’t wait to get out and about to explore the resort so we headed straight for the resort centre of Na'ama Bay. Na’ama Bay is a bustling area full of shops, market stalls, restaurants and bars. Our hotel was a 10 minute drive from Na’ama Bay which I loved as it meant that by day we were surrounded by peace and tranquility and by night we could enjoy the hustle and bustle of Na’ama Bay. So we felt that we had the best of both worlds. Most hotels that are not located in Na’ama Bay have their own courtesy transport to and from the resort centre. The temperature at night was absolutely perfect for strolling around and I can honestly say I have never encountered such friendliness in any other resort. Everyone from the security guard in the hotel to the market traders smiled and said hello and they absolutely love children.
One of the major attractions of Sharm is the diving and we were not disappointed. The corals and fish life are just amazing. Most hotels have their own dive schools and their own private beaches.
We also took a boat ride to the beautiful National Park of Ras Mohammed and visited St Catherine’s Monastery and Mount Sinai which is where Moses received the 10 Commandments.
For the more adventurous, I can recommend the desert safari and for the romantic at heart, you can’t beat spending the night star-gazing in the desert.
At the end of our 7 day stay, I was very reluctant to pack my case. I had absolutely fallen in love with Sharm and felt completely relaxed and rejuvenated. As we all waited in the hotel reception to board our coach back to the airport, everyone took it in turns to say goodbye to our friends in the hotel. We were all sad to leave but delighted that we had found a wonderful place to come back to.
