Islantilla, Costa de la Luz

Saturday 28th June 2008

4 Stars

This year I was planning to do a 2-centre summer holiday. The first week we would spend in Puerto Banus with family, so for the second week I was looking to go somewhere within reach of the Costa del Sol but a lot quieter, with good children's facilities and most importantly a good standard of accommodation.
The Costa de la Luz seemed to tick all the boxes. It was a part of Spain that I had never visited before and it appeared to be a lot more relaxing than the Costa del Sol. I had received some really positive feedback from clients and family members who had stayed in the Oasis Aparthotel in Islantilla which had the added bonus of a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment so the decision was made!

The drive from Puerto Banus to Islantilla took about 4 hours allowing for some short stops along the way. Islantilla is also easily accessible from Faro and Seville airports.

Once we checked into the Oasis I knew we had made the right choice. The accommodation was very spacious, the pool area was beautiful and the icing on the cake was the fact that it was right on the beach. The other guests and staff were mostly Spanish but that didn't stop the children from mixing with the other kids in the kids club and in the pool. There were lots of activities around the pool during the day for all age groups and every night there was a kiddies disco which we were not allowed to miss!

The restaurants and shops were just a short walk from our hotel along the promenade and whilst there wasn't a huge selection of restaurants, we were well catered for during our week long stay. I was so pleased to see that there were no tacky tourist shops, just a well-stocked supermarket, some nice restaurants and some lovely boutiques. The restaurant menus were all in Spanish and the staff spoke very little English which meant that we really had to try to communicate in Spanish. Considering I've been going to Spain for the last 15 years it was probably about time that I attempted to speak some Spanish!

The resort of Islantilla is very pretty, the locals are very friendly and very family oriented. Everybody walks along the promenade in the evening with their families and their dogs! It is also extremely wheelchair friendly.

I thoroughly enjoyed my week in Islantilla. I felt that this was one of the most charming and authentic resorts I have ever visited and I really look forward to returning very soon.
