Now that our family is made up of 2 adults and 2 children ages 5 and 2 we venture to France most years. I must say I love this type of holiday and the reason is because the minute we set sail from Cork with Brittany Ferries we are on holiday! Once onboard the ship our kids have freedom with a swimming pool, children’s play area, face painting for kids etc. They are so happy with this and once children are happy, parents are happy too! Cabins on board are perfect with bunk bed type beds that fold into the walls of the cabin. Also onboard you have casual and more formal dining so again this suits all types of travellers.

Upon arrival in Roscoff it’s an easy process disembarking the ship. We have taken the 8 hour drive and the 6 hours drive to the Aquitaine and Charente Maritime regions of France and on both occasions our kids were fantastic with the drive. It’s such a pleasure driving in France as it’s motorway the whole way down and with great pit-stops and excellent facilities for children ie. playgrounds, we’re well on the way for having a great holiday. If you don’t fancy driving, there are a lot of flight options to airports in all regions and then take car hire.

Our first ever visit to France was to the Aquitaine region and a place called Gastes. The campsite itself was so suitable for toddlers and younger children. We had a really relaxing holiday as we knew our toddler was safe. Outdoor swimming pools have water slides with qualified lifeguards, playgrounds the children will love and crazy golf are some of the facilities onsite. Our second visit was to the Charente Maritime region and a place called Les Mathes close to La Palmyre where we found one of Europe’s biggest Zoos – A great day out for all the family but get there early as it’s always busy! Again the campsite here was suitable for all ages from young to teenage years. This is a great place to hop on a bike with the kids and explore the area as there are cycle lanes in a lot of areas. After a long day of adventure it’s so nice to sit outside your accommodation and have a barbeque and a few glasses of Vino. Entertainment on site at night is very well put together and again so suitable for the kids.
For parents with kids of all ages, it’s one of the best holidays you will ever have. My 5 year old is still talking about his holidays to France and we’ve been to other destinations with him and he always refers to France no matter what and he loves watching the video footage we took especially of him coming down the slides.
